2011 has been a very good year for 3D, as the first seven months of the year have seen the release of 10 films in the format, of which three are certifiable hits, earning over $200 million in the US box office while Alice in Wonderland earned over $334 million and Toy Story 3 earned more than $400 million. And expect the 3D juggernaut at the box office to continue with the release of some highly-anticipated films in the last third of the year. Here is a list of some 2011 upcoming 3D movies for September to December.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one. Since this is the last film in the extremely-successful series, Warner Brothers decided to release it in two parts, with the first to open in November and the second in July 2011. The most-awaited of the remaining 2011 upcoming 3D movies and one that is seen as an acid test for the controversial 2D to 3D post-conversion process.

Tron Legacy. Although the original movie, which was released in 1982, was not a big box office hit, it has grown in stature over the years and is now seen as a trailblazer in many ways, particularly in its use of computer graphics to produce some startling imagery. Now that the popular culture has caught up to the original, the belated follow-up, set to be released in December 2011, is generating major buzz.
Megamind. Dreamworks Animation’s follow-up to their successful How to Train Your Dragon features the voices of Brad Pitt, Will Ferrell and Tina Fay in an animated superhero parody to be released in November.
Tangled. Disney has done pretty well with the 3D format, generating animated hits such as Toy Story 3 and Up. The latest Disney animated 3D film is a new take on the familiar fairy tale of Rapunzel and is set to be released in December.
Jackass 3D. Not really one of the most anticipated 2011 upcoming 3D movies but, come on, aren’t you curious as to what they’ll do with the format?
